Tidbit Tuesday - Climb Your Own Everest
Hello,
Welcome to another Tidbit Tuesday where we aim to teach you something new about health, nutrition, lifestyle, training, and so much more, every week!
Today we are talking about climbing your own Mount Everest!
Everyone is fighting a battle. It won't always be obvious, and it may not be the same every day, but we all just want to be the best version of ourselves and get the most out of our time.
Your reason, your "why" you get up and grind, week after week. It is different for everyone. It will also change over time for you.
But the deeper your "why", the more powerful the reason, the less likely you are to give up on yourself.
Something like "I want to lose weight" or "I want to look better", isn't very deep. You will shrug that off in an impulsive moment of drooling over something you're craving.
No, you need something much deeper!
We all want to look and feel good, but why is that important to us?
At Precision Nutrition we use a simple tactic called the 5 Why's?
Quite simply, we will ask ourselves why it is we want to get healthier. If the answer is "I want to look and feel good".
We simply ask ourselves again, why? "I want to look and feel good because it will give me more confidence".
Keep digging! Ask why, again!
I want more confidence because... and we continue to ask ourselves "why" at least 5 times, maybe more.
And we will no doubt have a much deeper reason as to why we want to improve our health.
Deeper reasons could include anything important to you! Examples might be to stay healthy enough to be able to PLAY with our grandchildren. It might be to avoid a predisposition to a genetic disease. It might be to get our dream job or inspire those around us!
Health and fitness is a common tool used to battle anxiety and depression, alongside other chronic illnesses.
But we can't forget everything else going on in our lives just to try and look better naked!
We still have responsibilities; life doesn't just stop while we chase our dreams.
That is where we must look to the Quality of Life Equation. You don't have to be all-in, all the time.
You can adjust how much effort you want to
put in, each day, by giving yourself options. Kind of like a dial, you decide how much effort from 1 to 10.
1 could be simply going for a walk and enjoying a healthy meal. 10 could be crushing a hard workout, or two, and hitting your macronutrient goals bang on!
Always be aware or what nourishes your soul most in the moment and adjust your effort accordingly.
If you have a social event or can't fend off a craving any longer, allow yourself to enjoy it!
One meal, one day, even one week isn't going to completely derail your progress if you didn't follow your plan perfectly.
This is your life. Your adventure. Enjoy it!
You decide what your goals are and how fast you want to get there, based on the sacrifices you are willing, and able to make.
And remember, your health didn't deteriorate over night. And it won't improve over night either. Cut yourself some slack and allow for the process to happen.
Weight loss and improving our health is a messy rollercoaster of a process. It certainly won't be a linear progression and you'll see some ups and downs. That is 100% normal and totally okay!
Learn to love the process, enjoy seeing yourself get better but also allow yourself to enjoy life and the little things.
Now get back up on that horse and conquer your own personal Mount Everest!
Happy progressing!
